Ahırkapı Hıdrellez Traditional Spring Festival

Ahırkapı traditional spring festival  is one of the seasonal festivals of all Turkish world which is celebrated as the first day of the “early summer”. It is also “day of  Hızır”, the day on which prophets Hızır and Ilyas met with each other on earth. The words Hızır and İlyas have since fused together pronounced as Hıdrellez. Hıdrellez Day falls on May 5-6. Hızır is the symbol of spring, and the new life which emerges with it. In Turkey it is believed  that;

  • He always helps well-meaning, benevolentpeople,
  • He helps improve peoples’ fortune,
  • He is the symbol of good omens,
  • He has the God-given power of working miracles.

Hıdrellez Festival, which is still celebrated with grand ceremonies in Anatolia, has been celebrated since ancient times. Although it is celebrated under different names and in different times, it is possible to see the motifs of Hıdrellez in many places. The arrival of spring and awakening of nature have been perceived by mankind as a phenomenon to be celebrated.

These joyful festivities aim at continuing the Hıdrellez tradition, reflecting musical diversity and proliferation in the society and exposing local tastes. This project has been conducting for years, already appropriated by Istanbul local residents and a center of attention for domestic and foreign tourist as it is a positive indication of the unity of diverse cultures. In fact, Hıdrellez, as a spring festival, has a universal character.

For the last couple of years “The Hıdrellez at Ahırkapı Streets” event has been turned to a collective civil community activity. Each year the activities begin on Ahirkapi Street and spread to the adjacent streets on 5th of May. Towards midnight the traditional fires will be jumped over and the wishes will be attached on the traditional Nahils. The individual wishes are written on a piece of paper and attached on the Nahil.  Nahil is a symbolic “wish-tree” and an ornament from Ottoman culture.

All the traditional spring foods and drinks are sold through the street-buffets, while the local musicians perform gypsy and Balkan music.  The Ahirkapi Roman Orchestra, which is consisting of the neighboring musician groups of Ahirkapi community, performed street concerts along with the guest performers. People dance and enjoy everywhere, and also you can take great photographs.

Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK

” PEACE AT HOME, PEACE IN THE WORLD” .

Mustafa Kemal ATATURK (1881–10 November 1938) was a Turkish army officer, a great teacher, revolutionary statesman, writer, and founder of the Republic of Turkey as well as its first President.

He stands as a towering figure of the 20th Century. Among the great leaders of history, few have achieved so much in so short period, transformed the life of a nation as decisively, and given such profound inspiration to the world at large.

ataturk2222

Atatürk became known as an extremely capable military officer by being the only undefeated Ottoman commander during World War I. Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, he led the Turkish national movement in the Turkish War of Independence. Having established a provisional government in Ankara, he defeated the forces sent by the Allies.

His successful military campaigns led to the liberation of the country and to the establishment of Turkey. During his presidency, Atatürk embarked upon a program of political, economic, and culturalreforms. An admirer of the Age of Enlightenment, he sought to transform the former Ottoman Empire into a modern, democratic, and secularnation-state.

Emerging as a military hero at the Dardanelles in 1915, he became the charismatic leader of the Turkish national liberation struggle in 1919. He blazed across the world scene in the early 1920s as a triumphant commander who crushed the invaders of his country. Following a series of impressive victories against all odds, he led his nation to full independence.

He put an end to the antiquated Ottoman dynasty whose tale had lasted more than six centuries   and created the Republic of Turkey in 1923, establishing a new government truly representative of the nation’s will.

ataturk4444

October 29, 1923 is a fateful date in Turkish history. On that date, Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the liberator of his country, proclaimed the Republic of Turkey. The new homogeneous nation-state stood in sharp contrast to the multi-ethnic Ottoman Empire out of whose ashes it arose. The dynasty and theocratic Ottoman system, with its Sultanate and Caliphate, thus came to and end. Atatürk’s Turkey dedicated itself to the sovereignty of the national will – to the creation of, in President’s words, “the state of the people “.Kemal’s private journal entries dated before the establishment of the republic in 1923 show that he believed in the importance of the sovereignty of the people.

In forging the new republic, the Turkish revolutionaries turned their back on the perceived corruption and decadence of cosmopolitan Constantinople and its Ottoman heritage. For instance, they made Ankara the country’s new capital. A provincial town deep in Anatolia, it was turned into the center of the independence movement. Ataturk wanted a “direct government by the Assembly” and visualized a representative democracy, parliamentary sovereignty, where the National Parliament would be the ultimate source of power.

ataturk7777

His achievements in Turkey are an enduring monument to Atatürk. Emerging nationsadmire him as a pioneer of national liberation. The world honors his memory as a foremostpeacemaker who upheld the principles of humanism and the vision of a united humanity. ”He said; Peace at home ,peace in the world”.

Tributes have been offered to him through the decades by such world statesmen as LloydGeorge, Churchill, Roosevelt, Nehru, de Gaulle, Adenauer, Bourguiba, Nasser, Kennedy, andcountless others. A White House statement, issued on the occasion of “The AtatürkCentennial” in 1981, pays homage to him as “a great leader in times ofwar and peace”. It is fitting that there should be high praise for Atatürk, anextraordinary leader of modern times, who said in 1933: “I look to the world withan open heart full of pure feelings and friendship”…

Topkapı Palace(Topkapı Sarayı)

Topkapi is the largest and oldest palace in the world to survive to our day. It is a palace in Istanbul, Turkey, which was the official and primary residence in the city of the Ottoman Sultans for 400 years.

istanbul-topkapi-sarayi1

Initial construction began in 1459, ordered by Sultan Mehmed II, the conqueror of Byzantine Constantinople. The palace is a complex made up of four main courtyards and many smaller buildings.  At the height of its existence as a royal residence,  the palace was home to as many as 4,000 people,  formerly covering a larger area with a long shoreline. Situated on the acropolis, the site of the first settlement in Istanbul,  it commands an impressive view of the Golden Horn,  the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara.

topkapi_palace_main2

Following the conquest of the city in 1453, the young Sultan Mehmet moved the capital of the empire to Istanbul, His first palace was located in the middle of the town. The second palace, which he built in the 1470’s, was initially called the New Palace, but in recent times it came to be known as the Topkapi Palace.

Topkapı is a classical example of Turkish palace architecture. It consists of tree- shaded courtyards, each serving a different purpose and opening onto one another with monumental gates. The courtyards are surrounded by functional buildings. From the time of its construction, the palace developed constantly with alterations and additions made by each sultan.

fatih sultan

When it was used as a palace, it served more functions than one usually associates with royal residences. Although it was the residence of the Sultan, the sole ruler of the empire, it was at the same time the center of the administrative affairs, the place where the council of ministers met, and the treasury, mint, and state archives were located there. The highest educational institution of the empire, the university of the sultan and the state was also here.

Therefore it was the heart, the brain, the very center of the Ottoman Empire. Much later, the harem (private quarters)  of the sultans was moved here too.

After the end of the Ottoman Empire in 1921, Topkapı Palace was transformed by government decree on April 3, 1924 into a museum of the imperial era.In 1924 it was turned into a museum at Atatiirk’s request. The Topkapı Palace Museum is under the administration of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The palace complex has hundreds of rooms and chambers, but only the most important are accessible to the public today.

The complex is guarded by officials of the ministry as well as armed guards of the Turkish military. The palace is full of examples of Ottoman architecture and also contains large collections of porcelain, robes, weapons,  shields,  armor, Ottoman miniatures, Islamic calligraphic manuscripts and murals, as well as a display of Ottoman treasure and jewelry. Most of the objects exhibited in the palace today are unique masterpieces.

The palace was a setting for state occasions and royal entertainments and is a major tourist attraction today, containing the most holy relics of the Muslim world such as the prophet Muhammed’s cloak and sword. Topkapı Palace is among those monuments belonging to the “Historic Areas of Istanbul”.
